The Five-Dimensional Self by Dr Richard Claydon.

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” - Oscar Wilde

When I teach leadership, the first thing I teach is the self. I elicit what people know about themselves.

What comes back is the language of traits, an MBTI or DiSC categorisation, or perhaps a list of values associated with some identity labels.

That’s not who you are. That’s merely the psychology of the stranger.

So much of good leadership requires knowing who you are, the role you are playing, and the future you that you are trying to become. The language of traits, types, values and identity doesn’t cut it. If I hear this language, I know there is much work to do.

In this week’s Drinking Dialogue, we will look at five dimensions of the self.

  • The Psychology of the Stranger: how much does the mainstream language of traits, types, values and identities help you know yourself
  • The Neuroscientific Self: how can neuroscience help you capture the depth and breadth of this knowing of self
  • The Narrative Self: how can an understanding of social role and social stories help this deeper and broader knowledge of self
